Music, Theatre, and a Season to Remember??
For WAB’s student performers, the stage is more than a place to showcase talent, it’s a space for collaboration and self-expression. In Season 2, students traveled across Asia, learning from professional musicians, theatre artists, and each other. From the vocals of the ISCMS choir in Shanghai to the storytelling of APAC Theatre in Hanoi and the harmonies of APAC Band in Shanghai, WAB students didn’t just perform—they connected, grew, and left a lasting impression on every stage they stepped onto.?
ISCMS – International Schools Choral Music Society ?
In February, 18 WAB students traveled to Wellington College in Shanghai to participate in the International Schools Choral Music Society (ISCMS). Since its founding in 2007, ISCMS has united students and educators from international schools across Asia and the Middle East, creating exceptional music in world-class concert venues.??
Over the course of three days, students engaged in intensive rehearsals, collaborating with peers and professional musicians. High School music teacher Michelle Yip shared, "This immersive experience challenged students to develop deeper musical expression while strengthening their confidence in live performance."
This year's festival, themed "Songs of Destiny," featured performances of works by Glinka, Lambert, and Brahms, while the big band brought classic and original jazz pieces to life in a thrilling concert at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre Concert Hall. "The opportunity to perform in a professional setting and learn from expert musicians made ISCMS an unforgettable and transformative experience for all involved," Michelle added.
?APAC Theatre
WAB students traveled to the United Nations International School (UNIS) in Hanoi, Vietnam, to participate in APAC Theatre this year. Guided by professional artist Mark Hill, students explored creative starting points that later evolved into original performances inspired by this year's APAC theme: "Climate Change."?
The festival, hosted at UNIS, also welcomed three artists from the Highly Sprung Theatre Company (UK), who worked with student ensembles to create a collaborative performance incorporating all participants.??
Middle School and High School Theater teacher Leah Bramley shared, "It was incredibly exciting—and exhausting—to work with the professionals. The final performance was a powerful, evocative piece involving all 60 students." She added, "APAC Theatre is non-competitive, emphasizing collaboration and creativity. By the end of the weekend, strong friendships had formed between schools."
APAC Band
From February 20 to 22, WAB's High School APAC Band traveled to Shanghai for the APAC Band Festival, hosted by Concordia International School of Shanghai.??
WAB’s Whole School Musician-in-Residence and Instrumental Coordinator, Joyce Liu, expressed, "The APAC Band Festival brings together talented musicians from six schools—not just to rehearse for a final performance, but to build connections, celebrate musical excellence, and share the joy of music-making with 86 participants from different schools."
Students dedicated over six hours a day to rehearsals, culminating in a phenomenal final concert on the last night—an inspiring showcase of dedication, artistry, and musical collaboration.??
