Exploring Career Paths Through World of Work

Exploring Career Paths Through World of Work

Above is a video produced by last year's WoW students JJ and Jett, who interned at the WAB Communications Office. If you want to learn more about last year's WoW, click here to read this student-written story.

What if high school students could step into the professional world before even graduating? At WAB, the World of Work (WoW) program offers Grade 10 students exactly that—hands-on experience, skill-building, and career exploration in a real-world setting.

Taking place from June 9 to June 13, this program allows students to discover their strengths, explore new industries, and gain invaluable workplace experience through non-paid internships. To learn more about how WoW supports students in their career journey, read this Q&A with Michelle Chow-Liu, WAB's High School Counseling Learning Leader.

1) Can you tell us about the World of Work (WOW) at WAB?

WAB's World of Work program (WOW) is designed for Grade 10 students to explore their future career paths. It enables students to assess their strengths, discover new skills, and gain hands-on experience through non-paid internships. This program emphasizes the importance of practical experiences in shaping career choices and personal growth. Students engage with local businesses and organizations, allowing them to gain insights into various industries and professions. The WOW program aims to foster a sense of responsibility, independence, and confidence in students as they prepare for life after school.

2) Why does WAB run a World of Work program?

WAB runs the WOW program to equip students with the necessary tools for informed decision-making about their future careers. The program includes lessons on resumes, cover letter writing, and interview skills. The program helps bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application by exposing students to real-world work environments. It encourages students to explore their interests and passions while developing critical life skills. The initiative also aligns with WAB's commitment to holistic education, ensuring students are well-prepared for their next steps, whether in higher education or the workforce.

3) What skills can students gain through this experience?

Students can acquire various skills essential for their future careers through the WOW program. Students will practice all the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills over the internship week. These include communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and time management. Additionally, they gain practical skills specific to their internship roles, such as customer service, technical skills, and project management. The exposure to workplace dynamics helps students understand professional etiquette and the importance of networking. These experiences cultivate personal and professional growth, building a strong foundation for their future endeavors.

4) How does this contribute to students' learning and help with their career exploration?

The WOW program significantly contributes to students' learning by providing experiential learning opportunities that complement their academic knowledge. Through internships, students can apply classroom concepts in real-world settings, deepening their understanding of various industries. This experience aids in career exploration, allowing students to assess their interests and aptitudes more effectively. Engaging with professionals in diverse fields fosters curiosity and motivation, encouraging students to consider various career paths. Ultimately, the program helps students develop a clearer vision of their future and the steps needed to achieve their goals.

5) How can parents support this program?

Parents can support the WOW program by encouraging their children to take an active interest in their career exploration. They can discuss potential internship opportunities and help students identify their strengths and interests. Additionally, parents can assist in networking efforts by connecting students with professionals in their fields of interest. Encouragement and support during the application process are crucial, as well as attending informational sessions or workshops related to the program. Parents can play a vital role in their children's success in the WOW program by fostering an open dialogue about career aspirations.

6) How does this program tie into the Career Fair?

The WOW program ties into the Career Fair by serving as a preparatory step for students to explore various career options. The Career Fair, scheduled for Monday, February 10, allows students to meet representatives from different industries, providing valuable insights into potential career paths. It complements the WOW program by offering additional resources and networking opportunities. Students can learn about various internship options that align with their interests and aspirations. Both initiatives emphasize the importance of career exploration, helping students make informed decisions about their futures and empowering them to pursue their passions. Students are also encouraged to find their WOW internship through the Career Fair.

If you're interested in sharing your professional story with our students on Monday, February 10, or someone you know has an interesting or unusual career path they would like to share to inspire our students, please fill out this interest form here by scanning the QR code.
