Igniting Creativity and Confidence at MS Got Talent
This week, our Middle School students participated in the exciting showcase - MS Got Talent. From singing and dancing to magic tricks and instrumental performances, this event offers a unique opportunity for students to step up and shine. But how exactly does this student-led event work, and what impact does it have on our young learners? Let's discover more through this Q&A below with Marnitz Breytenbach, WAB's Middle School Design teacher and Grade 7 Learning Leader.
1. Could you tell us about MS Got Talent and how it is organized?
MS Got Talent is a student council-led activity that invites all Middle School students to showcase their talents. Many of our students participate in after-school activities and off-campus activities, and the student council wanted to provide them with another platform to share their skills with the Middle School community. The student council takes charge of organizing the event, including announcements and promotions, collecting entries, and managing the music. They host auditions, provide constructive feedback, and ensure that every participant feels comfortable and confident in their performance. Additionally, they create certificates for both winners and participants to celebrate their achievements.
2. How does MS Got Talent encourage students to step out of their comfort zone?
The talent show features a wide variety of performances, many of which students have never presented in front of an audience before. Stepping out of their comfort zones and onto a stage in front of the entire Middle School takes remarkable courage, and our students rise to the challenge with incredible enthusiasm and determination.
3. What skills do students learn from preparing for and participating in this show?
Participating in a middle school talent show helps students develop important skills such as public speaking, creativity, and self-expression. Through rehearsals and balancing responsibilities, they gain time management, discipline, and organizational skills. Group performances teach teamwork, communication, and problem-solving while performing on stage builds confidence and resilience by overcoming stage fright and accepting constructive feedback. Students also develop empathy and a sense of community as they support and appreciate their peers' talents. These experiences foster personal growth and prepare them for future challenges.
4. How do activities like MS Got Talent tie into belonging at WAB?
One of my favorite aspects of the talent show is seeing students from different grades come together to perform in one event. In this setting, students show incredible encouragement and support for one another, regardless of the type of performance or social group they belong to. Everyone is welcome to share their talent and showcase what they are proud of, which contributes to a strong sense of belonging.
5. Anything else you would like to share with us about MS Got Talent?
We would like to encourage all Middle School students to get involved in MS Got Talent and take this opportunity to showcase their unique skills and passions! Whether it's singing, dancing, playing an instrument, performing magic, or any other talent, this is your chance to step onto the stage, share what you love, and inspire others. It's not just about performing—it's about building confidence, stepping out of your comfort zone, and being part of a supportive and encouraging community. We also ask parents to encourage their children to participate. Your support can make a huge difference in helping them feel confident and excited to share their talents. MS Got Talent is a wonderful platform for students to grow, connect with their peers, and celebrate the diverse talents within our school.
