As an integral part of WAB's Parent Link network, Chinese Link plays a vital role in connecting families, fostering belonging, and enhancing the cultural richness of our school. Chinese Link is a key contributor to many of WAB’s major events and community initiatives. Through a blend of cultural celebration, shared learning, and wellbeing-focused programming, Chinese Link is a connector between families, students, and staff.
A Mission of Connection and Contribution
At its heart, Chinese Link aims to serve as a bridge between Chinese-speaking families and the wider WAB community. "Our goals are to foster positive communication between home and school, support student-led and school-wide events, and create meaningful social opportunities for parents," shared Eileen Gong, President of Chinese Link.
Their impact is wide-reaching: from volunteer support to fundraising, Chinese Link raised over CNY 33,000 during the 2023–24 school year to support school events. The group contributes to many of WAB's signature experiences—including the Community Picnic, Market Days, Fun Fair, and Temple Fair—while also offering tailored sessions in Chinese on topics like standardized testing and college admissions.
A Talent Show that Brought the Community Together
The recent Family Talent Show, hosted by Chinese Link, was a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community spirit. With over 20 family acts and more than 25 dedicated volunteers working behind the scenes, the event welcomed a full audience of more than 200 families, friends, and staff.
The performances captured the incredible range of our community, with students from Early Childhood all the way to Grade 12 taking the stage. Our youngest performer, from ECC, brought smiles to the entire audience, while high school seniors shared their musical talent. There were traditional operas, piano and guqin solos, energetic beatboxing, and family duets.
With sponsorships and support exceeding CNY 200,000, the show was more than just a performance; it was a testament to what's possible when students, staff, and parents come together with a shared purpose.
"This event was a true community effort," reflected Adele He, Vice President of Chinese Link and show director. "It showcased the creativity and cooperation of students, parents, and staff working hand in hand."
Mental Health and Belonging
As families navigate the challenges of parenting and international life, Chinese Link has increasingly focused on supporting wellbeing. Initiatives like parent golf events, psychology workshops, and collaborations with school sports teams offer spaces for connection, support, and self-care.
Equally important is Chinese Link's commitment to cultural sharing. Events like the Chinese Movie Night series, co-hosted with Community Link, bring families of all backgrounds together.
"Chinese Link not only connects Chinese families to WAB, but opens cultural doors for everyone," said Eileen. "Through shared moments, we build mutual understanding."
