I-DEAS Celebrating We All Belong?
At WAB, we proudly recognize and celebrate the diverse tapestry of our community, that's why we have dedicated a week each year to honor our commitment to I-DEAS (Inclusion through Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism, and Social Justice). It serves as a vibrant reminder of our shared values and the importance of fostering a sense of belonging for every member of our school.
During I-DEAS Week 2024, Elementary School students connected with their Middle and High School peers through cultural activities, workshops, and buddy projects. These interactions not only strengthened friendships across grades but also enriched the students' understanding of different cultures and perspectives, helping them discover commonalities and celebrate differences.
In addition to these collaborative efforts, our Middle and High School students took the lead in organizing a variety of workshops aimed at raising awareness about identity and critical social issues. These student-led initiatives showcased leadership skills and provided a platform for meaningful discussions and self-reflection. Students also worked with external community partners, like the African Travelling Teacher and Migrant Children’s Fund, and brought representatives on-campus, in person and virtually to help them better understand other communities and their needs.
Throughout the week, students engaged in cultural activities, presentations, and collaborative projects that not only fostered creativity but also deepened their social-emotional learning. These activities allowed them to explore their identities while developing a greater appreciation for the diversity that surrounds them.
WAB's Head of Middle School Counselling, Rachel George shared, that I-DEAS Week "not only builds up social awareness, but it really helps to create that sense of belonging that we have here at WAB".
