G10 Student Hannah Shortlisted by NYT's Teen Photo Essay Contest
WAB's Grade 10 student Hannah has recently been shortlisted as one of the nine runner-ups in the "Where We Are" photo essay contest organized by the New York Times. Out of the 528 entries submitted by teenagers from around the globe, Hannah's submission stood out.
To participate in the contest, students were required to select and document an interesting local, offline community, engaging in both photography and interviews with its members. The goal was to skillfully intertwine these elements with an introduction and captions, creating an immersive experience for viewers.
The contest not only aimed to enhance students' technical abilities but also encouraged them to step out of their comfort zones. It provided an opportunity for participants to break barriers and connect with people they hadn't previously known.
Hannah reached the finals with her piece titled "The Boys in Ballet." Her photo essay tells a beautiful story that focuses on a group of Chinese orphan boys, aged 7 to 8, who have recently embarked on the journey of learning ballet, which provides them with an opportunity to be seen and to strive for the chance to perform and represent themselves.
