EAL teachers collaborate with all teachers in the grade level to co-plan, co-teach and co-assess. We know students acquire language most effectively when they are involved in all learning activities in the classroom. And our model is designed to support maximum integration into all classroom activities. 

Based on individual needs, support could be provided in class with small-group instruction, directed mini-lessons, one-on-one assistance, and/or targeted additional instruction. Students who are new to English will also access the Emergent and Bridging English Programs. 

Emergent English (EE) and Bridging English (BE) Programs

The Emergent and Bridging English Program gives intensive daily English language support for those new to English. Students involved in this program will attend Emergent or Bridging English classes during the Languages block.  These students will join all other blocks with their homeroom.

To determine English language progress and proficiency levels, we use?WIDA descriptors and regular assessment results, teacher input and observation, and student evidence of learning. 

EAL teachers collaborate with parents and all subject teachers to support multilingual students as they learn to use English for making meaning, showing understanding, and expressing themselves proficiently in social and academic contexts.  

EAL supports multilingual learners to develop language skills in the following domains: 

• Listening 
• Reading 
• Speaking 
• Writing 

?And, for these purposes: 

• Social 
• Academic 
• Public 
• Occupational 

Based on individual needs, differentiated support is provided through: 

• English Language Acquisition class  
• English for Academic Purposes: A class that supports the English needed for all academic subjects 
• In-class support through co-planning, co-teaching and co-assessing with subject teachers 
• Day 9 Workshops focused on practicing listening, reading, speaking and writing skills.

To determine English language progress and proficiency levels, we use the?IB Middle Years Programme’s Language Acquisition criteria,?WIDA descriptors and yearly assessment results, teacher input and observation, and student evidence of learning. 

EAL Teachers support multi-lingual students in language acquisition to help them reach the high level of English language proficiency required for full participation in the WAB High School curriculum. 

EAL students are supported through the following programs: 

• In-Class Language Support  
  This program is designed to support EAL students in different classes by co-planning, co-teaching and co-assessing with the subject teacher. 
• Academic Reading and Writing? 
  (Grade 11 and 12)? 
  The aim of this class is to develop academic reading and writing skills and to support student learning in Grade 11 and 12 courses. This class is an additional class in the student’s schedule. 
• Individual Support? 
  Individual Support is available to all EAL students in Grades 9-12, to assist students with classroom work in all subject areas. Sessions for work revision, editing, as well as listening, reading, speaking and writing skills are offered every Day 9.
